What’s with All the “Vol”s?

October 16, 2017

Many of you are probably familiar with Juvéderm. Even if you haven’t had it, you’ve likely heard the name of our most popular line of dermal fillers. For years we’ve had Juvéderm Ultra and Juvéderm Ultra Plus, and they were great, but they didn’t ideally serve every filler need. Within the last couple of years, Juvéderm has launched 3 new fillers, and their names all start with Vol: Voluma, Volbella, and Vollure. Three very different products with very similar names. To find out what makes each one unique, read on!

The first in this new line was Voluma. It is designed for injection into thicker areas, like the cheeks and jawline. This serves a dual purpose — to replace volume that we naturally lose as we age, which in turn helps to subtly lift the lower face. Because it goes a bit deeper than other fillers there tends to be less bruising and swelling than in some other facial areas, and although it’s thicker than most, it’s also incredibly smooth. With full treatment, which for many clients may require more than one syringe, correction can last up to 2 years. That’s pretty impressive!

The next filler introduced on the market last year was Volbella. Volbella is very thin and soft, ideal for injection in the lips. It was designed to enhance the lip line and to fill in the fine vertical lines around the mouth, often caused by smoking, drinking through straws, or blowing lots and lots of kisses. Volbella contains less hyaluronic acid (the substance naturally present in your body that attracts and holds water, which is also found in most dermal fillers). As a result, it is not meant for adding a lot of volume, but rather for smoothing. Though indicated for lips, its softness also makes it ideal for subtly filling in hollows under the eyes. For most patients, Volbella can last up to 1 year.

The most recent addition to join the lineup is Vollure. Think of this one as a more natural looking, longer lasting Ultra or Ultra Plus. It’s ideal for filling in moderate to deep folds, like nasolabial folds and marionette lines (I still shudder when I hear that name). Unlike Ultra and Ultra Plus, though, this baby lasts up to 18 months! If you like the idea of being injected in the face less often, this one’s for you.

If you’re hesitant of an 18-month commitment or prefer to stick with what you know, fear not — Juvéderm Ultra and Ultra Plus are still available. (Side note: Juvéderm Ultra Plus may be the recommended product for deeper folds requiring more volume). If I’ve piqued your curiosity and you’d like to try out any of the newer Juvéderm products, give us a call! In October, we are offering a mix and match special of 15% off a second syringe and 20% off a third with any of our 3 highly trained injectors. Just think — this month’s treatment could last you until 2019!
